NCLEX for international nurses: What You Need to Know

Looking for help with NCLEX for international nurses? You are in the right place. This guide gives nursing candidates across the USA and Canada clear, practical steps to prepare for the NCLEX with confidence.

Your Path to the NCLEX-RN as an IEN

Every year thousands of nurses educated in the Philippines, India, Nigeria, Kenya, Jamaica, the United Kingdom and other countries pass the NCLEX-RN to build careers in North America. The process is detailed, but it is very achievable with the right plan.

Steps for the United States

  1. Choose the state where you want licensure and review that board of nursing’s rules for international applicants.
  2. Complete a credential evaluation if your board requires one (for example through CGFNS or another approved evaluator).
  3. Meet English proficiency requirements where applicable (such as IELTS or TOEFL).
  4. Apply to the board of nursing, then register for the NCLEX-RN with Pearson VUE.
  5. After passing, complete licensure and immigration steps (such as a VisaScreen certificate, if required).

Steps for Canada

  1. Create an account and apply with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS).
  2. Submit identity, education, registration and language-test documents.
  3. Apply to your chosen provincial regulator, which may require a competency assessment or bridging education.
  4. Once approved, register for the NCLEX-RN and book your exam.

Why IENs Find the NCLEX Challenging

  • Different drug names, units and practice standards than home country.
  • Unfamiliar Next Generation NCLEX question formats (bowtie, matrix, case studies).
  • Emphasis on delegation, scope of practice and client rights in North American systems.
  • Balancing study with work, family and immigration paperwork.

Our review addresses each of these with North American practice context, NGN-style questions and a flexible study plan.
