Looking for help with failed the NCLEX? You are in the right place. This guide gives nursing candidates across the USA and Canada clear, practical steps to prepare for the NCLEX with confidence.
Failing the NCLEX is painful, but it is not the end of your nursing career. Many successful nurses passed on their second or third attempt. What matters now is having a smarter plan for your retake.
Step 1: Give Yourself a Short Reset
Take a few days to rest and process. Talk to people who support you. Then commit to a start date for your new study plan.
Step 2: Review Your Candidate Performance Report (CPR)
Candidates who do not pass receive a Candidate Performance Report showing performance in each content area as above, near or below the passing standard. Use it to decide where to spend most of your study time.
Step 3: Understand Retake Rules
- United States: NCSBN requires you to wait at least 45 days between attempts. Your board of nursing may have additional rules or limits.
- Canada: Retake policies, including any limits on the number of attempts, are set by your provincial regulator. Contact your regulator before re-registering.
- Fees: You must pay the registration fee again. Fees rise on Feb. 1, 2027. See our NCLEX fee guide.
Step 4: Change How You Study
- Switch from memorizing to understanding rationales.
- Focus on clinical judgment and NGN question types.
- Strengthen prioritization and delegation.
- Take timed full-length exams to build stamina.
- Address test anxiety directly.
Step 5: Get Accountability
Repeat test takers often benefit most from one-on-one tutoring, where someone reviews your CPR, watches how you answer questions and corrects habits you may not notice.
